Vesna, from Ambrosia Glam Tribal. Upcoming talent in the bellydance scene, can’t wait to see what she does in the future.
Lamia, dancing to Smokey Taboo by Coco Rosie. Beautiful.
I love how bellydancers look like queens, but (in my experience) almost always dance w/bare feet. :) To me, it not only hearkens to one’s connection to to the earth and this dance’s grounded nature, but it also symbolizes a certain humility that’s part of this art, as well…
Of course it allows us to move better and have more control on this precious ground, but it also says something about this dance, this art.. and its practitioners- to me. It shows that this dance (in both history and practice) comes from an extremely natural, simple & unpretentious place. It shows the humbleness of human nature and the fragility of our being… And it shows that with the raiments which we wear, we can choose to elevated to as opulent or intricate a dance as we like.
..I dunno.. it’s hard to express… I just love that all these amazing, stunningly-adorned women, so beautiful in their person and practice, walk around w/bare feet. To me it not only signifies a certain humbleness, but also a very real, raw contact w/the ground we live on, that we walk on.. that we dance on.. as individuals, and as a species.. as a bunch of critters on one big, beautiful planet… And it illustrates this beautiful dichotomy that says one can be intricate and complex and divinely adorned, while at once truly simple and grounded and pure… Plus (to me), it has a way of reminding one of this dance’s (and dancer’s) roots… It alludes to the fact that where we all came from, like as not, was probably not the opulent place. ..And still, that is beautiful. :)
..But maybe that’s just me. ;)
